Drum Point Lighthouse
Road Biking

Southern Maryland boasts some of the most scenic bike routes, with light traffic, wide shoulders and historic sites along the way.  Rolling countryside with views of the Potomac River or Chesapeake lighthouses delight the passing cyclist.  A 23.4-mile excursion follows the escape route of John Wilkes Booth after he assassinated President Abraham Lincoln.    The Southern Maryland tri-county bicycle route map is available from county tourism offices in Prince Frederick, La Plata, and Leonardtown.  For information visit www.ecalvert.com/content/tourism/index.asp, www.explorecharlescomd.com/, or www.co.saint-marys.md.us/tourism

Calvert Cliffs

Off-Road Biking and Hiking Trails

A new paved Three Notch Trail passes through historic Charlotte Hall, where a farmers’ market promises fresh local produce and baked goods. Fossil hunting and dramatic views of the cliffs are the rewards that follow a shaded, two-mile walk to the beach at Calvert Cliffs State Park. The park includes 13 miles of circuit trails. Cedarville State Forest and St. Mary’s River State Park have many miles of easy trails that invite you to explore the area’s diverse natural, recreational and historic features.

Battle Creek Swamp Sanctuary

One of the newest additions to the Chesapeake Bay Gateways Network is the American Chestnut Land Trust’s 3,000-acre Parkers Creek Watershed Nature Preserve . The park has 14 miles of trails from which visitors can view cliffs, woodlands, farm fields, wetlands, an extensive salt marshland beach, and a variety of historic structures. Nearby, the Battle Creek Cypress Swamp Sanctuary offers an enjoyable nature walk on a boardwalk through this unusual ecosystem, one of the largest remaining sites where cypress trees occur naturally in Maryland.

The historic area of Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum features both a Woodland Nature Trail and Riverside Archaeology Trail.
