HIKING & BIKING

Ellicott City

Maryland beckons you to revel in four season fun at its finest. We put our best foot forward with biking routes and hiking trails that take you through unspoiled forests, down country lanes, around pedal-friendly small towns, and alongside historic sites, like Civil War battlefields. Here’s your chance to plan a cycling vacation across the state to see everything from our rocky western cliffs to our sandy eastern beaches and miles of scenic roads in between. Or connect to the American Discovery Trail or East Coast Greenway for that once-in-a-lifetime trip across the country.

While multi-use trails abound, numerous trails on rugged and remote terrain are open to hikers only and offer a glimpse of pristine natural settings in rare or exceptional environments. For example, Maryland offers 40 breathtaking miles of the renowned Appalachian National Scenic Trail that traces the crest of South Mountain. The trail is a favorite among backpackers, but can be enjoyed for day hikes as well.
